Filling in the Holes: Star Wars: The Clone Wars
As audiences sat spell-bound in 1977, they watched a young Luke Skywalker interact with Obi-Wan Kenobi after being rescued from the Tuscan Raiders. As they speak of Luke’s father and Obi-Wan’s past relationship, Obi-Wan makes a passing reference to fighting in the Clone Wars; Luke’s excited question; “You fought in the Clone Wars?” is innocently passed over as being irreverent to the current story-line. Yet George Lucas could not let go of the idea, he knew someday he would have to explore that time frame before Anakin turned to the dark side and the Galactic Republic was at war with the separatist group directed by the “dark side” of the “Force”. The Republic was being helped by the Jedi and an army of cloned warriors. The dark force army consisted mainly of androids, robots and siths.
It took Lucas thirty-one years to bring that idea to life. In the intervening years he gave us; A New Hope (Star Wars), The Empire Strikes Back, Return Of The Jedi, The Phantom Menace, Attack Of The Clones, and Revenge Of The Sith; the largest franchise in movie history, topping even the mighty Star Trek movie series. Now he brings us the “The Clone Wars”; comic books, novels, toys, video games, anime television series and now the animated movie.
The Clone Wars picks up with the wartime duties of Anakin and Obi-Wan when the Jedi were the all powerful force behind the Republics fights with the dark side and Dooku’s forces. The telling of the story of the middle years is beneficial for filling out the lives of the characters we have grown to love and grown to love to hate; Palpatine, Dooku, Padme, Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the quirky duo C3-PO and R2-D2. Having the story without the center was like telling world history from 1900-2000 and leaving out the mention of WWII; it was missing something that brought it all together. Even after we got the beginning at the almost middle before the real ending, this was actually the beginning of Luke’s story in the first place! (Confusing, but true)
We have already seen Anakin do his worst, killing the Jedi, the padawans, and the Sand People, losing his humanity and his ability to use the force for good, turning into Darth Vader; is it not time we see him as he was when he was whole and on the side of the right and the majestic? After all, once he was beloved by Yoda, Obi-Wan and Padme, so there was a life before the dark side took hold.
Anakin was a trusted member of the Jedi, and even if Yoda knew the flawed, sad man would become something worse, he still held him in high regard as the chosen one. Even Obi-Wan owed his life ten times over to the rescues by Anakin during the Revenge of the Sith. So yes the “The Clone Wars is a vital part of the story, and with the telling we will be all the richer as we once more get to experience the true power of the “Force”.
